The First Session

At Orewa Chiropractic, the Doctors of Chiropractic are trained in the differential diagnosis of musculoskeletal pain and disorders. This includes the identification of significant joint and muscle dysfunctions, disc derangement and nerve entrapment, as well as more uncommon but potentially serious disorders that can produce body pain.

History Taking

The process starts with history taking. By obtaining the required detailed information, we will rule out more serious problems and direct the examination to the areas and processes that are most likely causing the pain.

Physical Examination

This is followed by the thorough physical examination, which involves postural examination, assessment of movements and flexibility, stability and strength, as well as neurological examination if necessary.

Advanced Testing

Occasionally, it is necessary to obtain advanced testing such as X-Rays, CT scan or MRI (referral).

In most cases, after history taking, examination, and further testing are complete, a differential diagnosis can be established. If the problem is determined to be one that is treatable at Orewa Chiropractic, a treatment strategy is formulated and recommended to you. This plan will be discussed with you prior to the institution of any treatment.

Tailored Treatment

At Orewa Chiropractic, we establish a treatment strategy that is personalised to each patient. The treatment will be directed at those primary factors that were detected during the examination.  We treat all patients as individuals with specific needs and treatment goals. We are committed to providing the highest quality hands-on care for back pain, in a warm, caring environment.

Adjustments

Adjustment consists of gently moving the involved joint into the direction in which it is restricted and may involve the application of a short, quick movement in that direction. Slow mobilising movement may be also used.

Impulse IQ Instrument

The state-of-the-art IQ instrument has a high-tech sensor that provides information from your body’s response to adjustments. According to this, a micro-computer inside will adapt the number as well as the frequency of the inputs.

Muscle Relaxation/Stimulation

This procedure consists of gentle stretches to the involved muscle that have excessive tension, or repeated contractions of the muscle that is weak. Gentle finger pressure techniques may be applied to trigger points to relieve the pain associated with these points.

Strengthening, Stretching and Stabilisation

We will demonstrate to you a large variety of exercises from the basic of Pilates’ concept to most advanced using Swiss ball and elastic bands. You will able to login in the private part of this web site and choose in our library a large range of exercises for multiple conditions. We will also advise you the sort of aerobic activities that could help you such as walking, running, cycling or swimming. Consequently your back is maximally protected during routine activities.

Self-Management

We will recommend strategies that you can use at home or at work to take control of your condition.

Workplace and Lifestyle Advice

Workplace and lifestyle Advice is designed to address factors in your work, home or recreational activities that perpetuate the dysfunctions that lead to the condition you experience.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the most well-known aspect of Chinese Medicine and may be used alone or in conjunction with herbal medicine, moxibustion (the heating of specific acupuncture points using the herb Artemisia), or tui na (Chinese massage). It is likely that the acupuncture practitioner will also offer dietary and lifestyle advice or suggest a course of exercise.

Each of the organs of the body has its own associated channel or pathway of energy. These are often referred to as meridians. Very fine needles are inserted into points along the meridians with the aim of bringing the body to a point of balance and harmony.

Every aspect of the patient’s life is considered by the practitioner before the points are selected – sometimes it may be impossible to change someone’s life circumstance, but by using Acupuncture the person may be strengthened so that they are more easily able to deal with what life brings their way.

A visit to an Acupuncturist will usually take up to an hour, with the needles being left in place for 20-25 minutes of that time. Very often people go into a state of deep relaxation whilst the needles are in place and many drift off into a brief but sound sleep. Acupuncture is widely known for its effectiveness in treating musculo-skeletal injuries but has traditionally been used extensively in the treatment of respiratory, digestive, gynaecological and many other chronic conditions.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health care profession, primarily concerned with the diagnosis, the treatment and the prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health.

The aim of chiropractic is not just providing some relief, where it excels, but also treating the cause of the problem and so having the people back to what they miss. It can be playing golf every weekend, playing with kids again or just providing their best at work. The results of chiropractic care are different from every person as each individual is unique.

Who are Doctors of Chiropractic?

Doctors of Chiropractic – often referred to as chiropractors– practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health spine care that includes patient examination, assessment and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide prevention of spine disorders and lifestyle counselling.

Chiropractors have a unique expertise as they are intensive schooling trained, including one year of internship in a five year curriculum of full time in one of the accredited Universities or Colleges by the profession. After graduation, they pass a national board examination before attaining registration.

The Commission of Inquiry into Chiropractic in New Zealand advocated that Doctors of Chiropractic in this country are generally careful and skilled. Their finding was that there is no unusual degree of risk to patients who undertake chiropractic treatment from a registered chiropractor in New Zealand.

Doctors of Chiropractic are ACC registered.
